On 05/31/2011 at 1157 hours units from the Hodgeman County Sheriff’s Office, Hodgeman County EMS, Kansas Wildlife & Parks, and HorseThief Reservoir personnel were dispatched to the swim beach at HorseThief for a reported possible drowning.
On arrival officers found that Ma Sa Pha, 19, of Garden City had been swimming at the beach when he experienced severe cramps and began to struggle in the water. Friends recognized that he was in distress and pulled him to shore where he was initially unconscious and unresponsive. Pha was transported by EMS to the Hodgeman County Health Center where he was treated, stabilized, and released later in the day.
“Quick action by friends and a rapid response by medical personnel and emergency services who were at family functions and responded directly to the scene may have made an impact on this young man’s ability to recover from this near drowning”, said Sheriff Ron Ridley. “Within minutes of the initial call we had a firefighter, a nurse, and a doctor on the scene along with EMS and officers. Hodgeman County is so fortunate to have dedicated volunteers and professionals that will respond to a scene from home, work, or the restaurant on the corner to help out in a time of crisis.”
